The Ashanti Regional Police Command is yet to identify the seven alleged robbers gunned down by the police in a shootout

The Ashanti Regional Security Council has constituted and inaugurated a five-member Committee to independently investigate the killing of seven men in the Amansie West district of the Ashanti region by the Police recently.

A statement signed and issued by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, who is also the Chairman of the Regional Security Council to the media in Kumasi said, the Committee has representations from the Christian and Muslim communities, the Bureau of National Investigations, the Regional Coordinating Council, with a Justice from the Superior Court as Chairman.

The statement indicated that the Committee has one month to complete its work and submit its report to the Regional Minister. It noted that the Committee's mandate is to investigate to unravel the actual circumstances of the shooting to death of the seven persons about two weeks ago.

It would be recalled that about two weeks ago, police in the Ashanti Region announced the shooting to death of seven men near Manso Nkwanta in the Amansie West district of the Ashanti Region in what the Police claimed was a shootout with men they suspected to be armed robbers.

The incident led to serious agitation and street protests by Muslims and Zongo communities at Asawase in the Asokore Mampong Municipality who accused the Police in the region of deliberately tagging Zongo youth as deviants in recent times.

They vehemently refuted claims by the Police that the seven men recently killed were armed robbers arousing national attention in the process.
