Experts in Artificial Intelligence (AI) are being urged by the UN Secretary-General to use the field to benefit humanity.
The remarks by António Guterres were made in a video message to the two-day AI for Good Global Summit, which opened on Wednesday in Geneva.
The summit is investigating how so-called "intelligent machines" can play a role in tackling global challenges such as poverty and hunger.
Eradicating extreme poverty and creating a more just and equitable world are among the aims of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which promise to leave no one behind.
In his video message to the gathering, the UN Secretary-General pointed out that Artificial Intelligence can help accelerate progress towards a dignified life for all people.
However, he warned of some the potential pitfalls brought about by AI, such as concerns about cyber-security, human rights and privacy.
Mr. Guterres added that implications for development also are "enormous."
"Developing countries can gain from the benefits of Artificial Intelligence but they also face the highest risk of being left behind. This summit can help ensure that Artificial Intelligence charts a course that benefits humanity and bolsters our shared values. And the United Nations stands ready to be a universal platform for discussion.
Together, let us make sure we use Artificial Intelligence to enhance human dignity and serve the global good."
Leading minds in AI as well as humanitarians and academics are participating in the summit which is co-organized by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).
