Struggle for economic stability - Former Cape Verde President tells African youth

A former Cape Verde President, Pedro Verona Rodrigues Pires, has challenged African youth to continue to struggle for Africa's economic emancipation. 

He said their forebears fought slavery and colonialism and therefore, the onus now lies on the current generation to continue the struggle for economic stability, peace and security. 

Mr. Pires is in Tamale for a three day lecture at the University for Development Studies (UDS). 

The lecture organized by the UDS, is the sixth edition of the annual Africa Leadership Lectures organised by the University. 

The former President noted however that, African governments must develop the capacities of their youth through sound educational policies that will give the youth the skills and confidence to compete on the global stage. 

Mr. Pires who spoke through an interpreter emphasized the importance of skills development in the development of Africa and called for investment at all levels of education. 

"There is a need for far reaching reforms and extension of educational and vocational training systems, to guarantee training and capacity building, formal and informal. Particular practical and technological know how, must be made the main tool to boost social transformations and corporate modernization."

Mr. Pires is expected to end his lectures tomorrow (April 25) after delivering a lecture on the challenges of Africa. 

The Vice Chancellor of the UDS, Professor Gabriel Ayum Teye, in an interview with GBC’s Radio Ghana, said the annual Africa Leadership Lectures has enhanced the image of university since its inception."

The University will award the Former Cape Verde President with an honorary doctorate degree tomorrow.
