World Meningitis Day Marked today

April April 24th marks this year’s World Meningitis Day on the theme, ‘’Meningitis Matters’’. The day is to be used to raise awareness on the four different types of meningitis; bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic. ‘’Meningitis Matters’’.

It is also used to highlight the multiple vaccines needed to protect against meningitis due to the variety of bacteria and viruses that cause it.

In an interview with Radio Ghana in Koforidua, a New Juaben Municipal Disease Control Officer, Dennis Bansah, said meningitis is a potentially deadly disease that can kill within 24 hours. Those who survive from meningitis and septicemia often suffer from deafness, limb loss, brain damage and seizure.

He disclosed that more than two point eight million people are affected by meningitis worldwide.

Mr. Bansah disclosed that infants, adolescents, older people and people with weak immune systems are among those at higher risk.
 
Some of the symptoms of the disease, he noted, are fever, rash, vomiting, headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to light and drowsiness.
