Zimbabwe fires thousands of nurses on strike

Zimbabwe has sacked more than ten thousand nurses who have been on strike since Monday, over demands for higher salaries. 

Vice President Constantino Chiwenga said the nurses had refused to return to work, despite government heeding to their demands.
 
He said unemployed and retired nurses would be hired to replace those fired.

Mr Chiwenga accused the striking nurses of being politically motivated, describing the strike as "deplorable and reprehensible".
 
He said the funds would now be used to employ new nurses. 

The striking nurses said they wanted to see the money in their accounts first.
