You’re not funeral contractors: Ketu North Municipal Director of Education tells students

The Ketu North Municipal Director of Education, Mercy E. E. Ashiagbor has called on students within her jurisdiction to abstain from attending wake keepings and funerals and study hard.

She said “Pupils must take upon themselves to add value to the way they study and stop becoming funeral contractors in the District and beyond”, adding that, some parents also encourage the children to attend almost every funeral in town.

Addressing the 9th John Gatsi Educational Foundation Awards Ceremony held at the Evangelical Presbyterian Primary School, Ablorme-Dzodze, Madam Mercy noted that, “some parents only invest in material things rather than providing for their wards educational needs. Parents only send their wards into the public schools without any concern about their educational progress.”

These among others are things seriously affecting our education in the public schools, she suggested.

The Director again stressed that, “the concept of free education needs to be communicated to parents so that they can live up to expectation.”

For the past 9 years, the Foundation has been making intensive outreach to stakeholders of education through Headmasters, teachers, parents and pupils through various forms: motivation of pupils to learn for desired change of behavior, organization of in-service training for teachers in Science, Mathematics and English Language, engaging the parents and stakeholders in educational fora in order to achieve educational excellence in Ketu North Municipality.

Presenting the report from 2017 John Gatsi Foundation’s exam held at Afife Evangelical Presbyterian Primary, Professor Gatsi, the Founder, declared Vehem Mawunyo International School (Private) the Best School in 2018.

The best student, John Mensah is also from the Vehem Mawunyo International School.

In all, about 16 deserving students from private schools, received certificates, plaques, learning materials and cash prices.

Professor Gatsi called on stakeholders in public schools to intensify their monitoring activities and focus on teaching and learning.

He again, charged all stakeholders to contribute to reading and learning of the students at the basic level to help develop critical and well informed youths, who will be able to solve the problems of the Country.

On behalf of traditional rulers and elders of the Community,the Chief of Dzodze Ablorme Torgbui Adzofia V, appealed to parents to be concerned about their children and provide their educational needs without delay.

He asked them to monitor their wards, check their academic records regularly to know how they are performing in school.

Torgbui Adzofia V also called on pupils to be obedient and focus on their education.

He expressed his profound gratitude to the Foundation and Professor John Gatsi for devoting time and resources to promoting teaching and learning in the area.

The ceremony was chaired by the Country Director of Pencil of Promise, Freeman Gobah, who encouraged the children to learn as they advance to the next level in their education.
