Appointments Committee of Parliament to go ahead with vetting of Special Prosecutor nominee Martin Amidu despite petition before Supreme Court

Parliament’s Appointments Committee says it is ready to vet Special Prosecutor nominee Martin Amidu despite a suit challenging his nomination. 

Speaking on an Accra based private station the Minority Chief Whip Muntaka Mubarak, who is a member of the Appointments Committee said unless the Speaker Professor Aaron Mike Ocquaye, directs the Committee to ''stay'' the exercise, the public hearing will come on as planned. 

A Former Deputy Attorney-General, Dr. Dominic Ayine has filed a petition challenging the nomination of the anti-corruption campaigner as Special Prosecutor. 

In the Mr. petition Ayine, who is also the MP for Bolgatanga East said Mr Amidu, 66, is beyond the statutory age and is, therefore, not qualified to be appointed to a public office. 

The Special Prosecutor is entitled to the emolument, privileges and facilities of Appeals Court judges who retire at the age of 70.  Mr. Amidu, will be 73 years at the end of his seven year term as Special Prosecutor which the plaintiff says is unconstitutional.
