About 300 persons engage in illegal mining in Naaga, Upper East region

About three hundred persons are engaged in illegal mining in Naaga, a rice farming community in the Kassena Nankana municipality of the Upper East region. 

According to the paramount Chief of the area, Naba Bonsingo Orlando Awini, who is also the President of the Upper East regional House of Chiefs, illegal mining has affected farming especially rice production in the area. 

Naaba Awini made the assertion when the Deputy Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Paul Essien, paid him a visit in his traditional area. 

He said although efforts are being made to stop the illegal mining activities in the area, it is still ongoing. 

The aim of the visit was to engage with chiefs on the best measures to halt illegal mining in the region. 

Mr. Essien, said government is keen to stop illegal mining. It is therefore calling on the chiefs to join the crusade against the menace. 

Mr. Essien, as part of his two day visit to the region, visited chiefs in the Naaga, Bolgatanga, Talensi and Nabdam traditional areas.
