Gov't To Establish Jungle War Training School On Disputed Land Between Alavanyo & Nkonya

The Government of Ghana has finally acquired the controversial land between Alavanyo and Nkonya in the Volta Region for the Ghana Armed Forces to establish Jungle War Training School to put the rest, one of the longest communal conflict between the two communities since early 90s.

According to Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, the proposed Military School is about seventy percent (70° 0) complete, leaving the following areas: Ablution, Electrical Works, Water Connections, Access road to the site and Fencing of the Camp (Force Protection). 

Responding to a question asked by MP for Hohoe, Dr. Bernice Adiku Heloo, as to, "whether the proposed military structure on the disputed land between Alavanyo and Nkonya are in place and whether training activities have begun in the Area", Mr. Nitiwul noted,  "Speaker, in view of the fact that the structures are not fully completed, the School is not functioning currently as proposed. it is however, envisaged that when funds become available in 20l8, the Training School would be completed for commissioning and 
operationalization."

For the meantime, it is envisaged that occasionally some of the Jungle Welfare exercises from Akim Achiase Jungle Welfare School Will be conducted on the disputed land, The Minister disclosed.

He said, The Ministry of Defence has two usages for the school, "Geographically, it is noted that the disputed area has a virgin forest which is suitable for the establishment of a second (2) Jungle War Training school for the Military, in addition to the current Jungle War School at Achiase in the Eastern Region. 

Finally, the School would become the Training Centre for the Ministry of Defence’s proposed Special Forces, when funds become available."

In February 2015 the Ministry of Defence (MOD), in collaboration with the National Security Council Secretariat, proposed to establish a Military Training Jungle and Mountain Warlare Training School at the disputed land between AlavanyO and Nkonya Traditional Areas in the Volta Region. 

"The objectives of this laudable project are to facilitate the following: Currently, to used the Camp for accommodation of troops operating in that area." 

In the long term to use the facility as a training camp for Spoolal Forces training. 

Lastly, to use the presence of the military personnel to resolve the long standing protracted conflict as they dominate the area, he added.
