Anti-Kabila protest due today as DRC tensions mount

The opposition in the Democratic Republic of Congo has ramped up pressure on President Joseph Kabila to quit, calling for street protests today.

Tensions have been mounting over Kabila's refusal to step down.

He has been in power since 2001 and the prolonged rule has led to sweeping protests and a bloody crackdown.

The opposition said it wants a transition "without Kabila" in the Democratic Republic of Congo after December 31, in line with a peace agreement reached on New Year's Eve last year.

Kabila's government has pushed back the election by a year to December 23, 2018.
