Take advantage of planting for food program- Agric Director urges youth 


The Greater Accra Director of Agric, Delali Nutsukpo has called on the youth, especially the educated ones to go into full-time farming as a business, under the government's planting for food and jobs policy.

According to him the the government's planting for food and jobs presents enormous opportunities for every youth to take advantage of it, asserting that, "Agriculture will continue to play a vital role in our national development, into the future".

He said "the prospect of Agriculture as a subject in Ghanaian schools is brighter than before, but to achieve this, the face of Agric has to change to respond to global trends". 

Speaking at a day capacity building workshop for about 56 selected Senior High School Agric Teachers from Greater Accra Region, Mr. Nutsukpo however, admitted that, Ghana needs more educated farmers. 

Adding that, "to get educated farmers require a change in teaching of Agriculture Science in our schools to produce Practitioners instead of just Agric Scientists".

The training aimed at building the capacity of the Agric Science Teachers, in learning and teaching of Agric Science and to also help them to know various policies that are related to Agriculture in general in the Country, so that they can benefit from the policy.

The Greater Accra Regional Coordinator of Science, Technology, Mathematics, Innovation and Education (STMIE), Berthy Buah, charged the participants to focus more on  practical aspect of the subject and combine it with the theory or the classroom work in teaching the students.

She said, they don't want their Teachers to see Agric Course like other teaching subjects, adding that, "If it happens so, it becomes something like a theoretical activities but when they see it as something that can benefit them financially, they will  teach and practice it too".

According to her, "We want teachers to go beyond and teach the students the government policies, interventions the government is making  and the prospects in the Agric Sector", believing that, the children or the students will appreciate the importance of the subject, Agric.
