Climate insurance initiative targets millions in vulnerable countries An initiative announced at the latest UN climate change conference will provide insurance coverage to millions of people in some of the world's most vulnerable countries by 2020. The InsuResilience Global Partnership for Climate and Disaster Risk Finance and Insurance Solutions will support people in 49 countries, including small island states such as Fiji. It was announced on Tuesday in Bonn, where the international community has gathered for the UN climate change conference, or COP23. The announcement comes in the wake of a year of devastating extreme weather events, affecting countries and communities in Asia, the Eastern Caribbean and the Americas. Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of the UN Climate Change secretariat described it as "one, shining, example of what can be delivered when progressive governments, civil society and the private sector join hands with creativity and determination to provide solutions."
