President Akufo-Addo Approves Project To Address Forest Degradation

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has approved the Multilateral Mining Integrated Project, (MMIP) after Cabinet approval last week. 

This is to address forest degradation as a result of illegal mining and also ensure that mining is undertaken in a sustainable manner. 

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, John Peter Amewu announced this when Ministers of Environment and Natural Resources from Africa met the World Bank's representatives on Climate Change during COP23 in Bonn, Germany.

During COP 21 two years ago, the World Bank announced an African Climate Development Plan for counties. 

This plan is to supply Africa's acceleration towards climate resilience and low carbon development. 

The business Plan focuses on concrete investments that will deliver climate benefits. It also looks at addressing climate change in integrated manner. 

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources John Peter Amewu and his counterparts from Togo, Cote d’ voire and Morocco briefed the WB on measures  they  are undertaking to address climate change in their business plan.

Mr. Amewu talked about interventions by government in addressing deforestation. 
He mentioned a partnership with donors that allow  only regulated timber species outside the country.

He said with interventions including renewable energy investment and the REDD Plus strategy Ghana will not be part in contributing two percent to global carbon emissions this year as predicted.

His counterparts from Togo, Côte d'Ivoire and Morocco also presented their countries contributions and initiatives towards accelerating climate smart agriculture  to assess climate change.

A Senior Director, Climate Change of the World Bank, John Roome said unless efforts are made to reduce carbon emission at a price developing countries will continue  to bear the brunt of climate change.
