National Digital Property Addressing System Launched In Accra

President Akufo-Addo has launched the National Digital Property Addressing System which is part of the agenda towards formalising the digitisation of the economy. 

The new system will make it easy to find locations and also enhance service delivery during emergencies. 

President Akufo-Addo said the current informal nature of the economy is hampering development and job creation. 

He was hopeful the National Digital Property Addressing System will help address challenges posed by informal nature of the economy.   

In line with the NPP's government drive to formalize the economy, a plan to implement a national identification system which sits on a digital addressing system was initiated in this year.

The National Digital Property Addressing System is expected to make it easier to find locations in the country and boost emergency service delivery. It will aid government policies, planning and offer accurate data for service delivery. 

Vokacom, a Ghanaian ICT firm, designed the system and it is partnering the Ghana Post Company Limited to roll it out. 

The system is location-based and it is expected to provide an effective means of addressing every location and place in the country, including undeveloped parcels of land, using an information technology application (app).  

The app will generate a unique code for every property or location in Ghana, using the Global Positioning System (GPS) technology.  

A national address registry will be imbedded into the system to enable individuals to validate their home and business addresses for easy direction and identification purposes. 

The launch of the system is a precursor to the National Identification Authority’s Ghana card.

The system will be a major turnaround for a country that was last mapped in 1974 and lacks an efficient addressing system which has become a serious impediment to development and planning. 

Minister of Communication, Ursula Owusu Erkuful shares more light on the new system and it's intended benefits.  

President Akufo-Addo urged all stakeholders to liaise with the Ghana Post and Ministry of Information to take advantage of the system. 

He said his government will ensure the sustainability of the system. He was optimistic that cost of doing business in Ghana will reduce with the digitization of the economy. 

With the launch of the digital property address system, the era of using lotto kiosk, kooko seller and other obscured means to get location is over.
