Govt`s new regulation on safe gas use described as panic reaction

The Institute of Safety and Environmental Professionals has described government's new regulation on safe gas use as a knee jerk reaction. 

According to the President of the Institute, Nana Annor Amihere, the mere shutting down of stations and suspension of work will not solve the problem, adding that it rather indicts the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA), National Petroleum Authority (NPA) and other relevant Institutions for negligence of work.  

Following the gas explosion at Atomic Junction, Cabinet approved new regulations on safe gas use. 

Key among them, is the shutting down of gas and fuel stations without safety precaution and certification. 

But the NPA says within 24 hours of the coming into force of the regulation, it has conducted assessments and shut down more than twenty gas and fuel stations. 

Mr Annor Amihere said this is questionable because it is impossible for risk assessment to be done within 24 hours. 

The Executive Director of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers, Duncan Amoah, cautioned government against the closures and halting new constructions, saying government must rather carefully examine the possible causes of the explosion and safety precautions.
