FLOODS BRING LIFE TO A HALT IN PARTS OF ACCRA

It was a messy situation throughout this morning when a heavy downpour in the capital Accra showed how there is still a lot to be done in managing floods here. Whilst the capital seems to have largely been spared the usual floods that get the Kwame Nkrumah (Circle) Interchange in the news for wrong reasons, this morning’s downpour was a grim reminder of ominous possibilities.

A tour around some areas by GBCONLINE correspondents showed that serious work should be undertaken in specific areas of the capital that every now and then gets under water. Correspondent Mabel Adorkor Annang reported that the Shiashie area that links Okponglo on the Legon Road is one area that is calling for urgent attention. It was a serious situation as vehicles had to virtually ‘swim’ through a pool. She says there is an urgent need for a lasting solution to the problem here. Many commuters around the area might remember how in the late 1990s, a popular hotel located in the area had to bring its operation to a halt after one of such floods.

People in the area were compelled to walk since getting vehicles to transport them to their destinations became a challenge.

From other parts of the capital, correspondent Francis Edzorna Mensah witnessed how business activities were brought to a standstill as vehicles were stuck in unending traffic jams- the sort they call bumper-to-bumper. Many shops were closed as they waited for the flood to subside. 

Some were not able to leave home whilst others had to beat a retreat after being trapped in the middle of nowhere.
