IDEG calls for provisions in local government act

The Institute of Democratic Governance, IDEG, says as much as it supports the policy of electing MMDCEs, to ensure grassroots participatory democracy, it is calling for provisions in the local government act to make impeachment process available for the people.

This, according to IDEG, will bring erring MMDCEs to order now that the position is going to be elective.
 
A Research Fellow at IDEG, Kwesi Jonah who said this in an interview in Sunyani, said Ghanaians have welcomed the decision to have the position of MMDCEs elective.

The emerging concern now, is how to get those MMDCEs who will go contrary to the will and demands of the electorate, disciplined, since the President’s power to appoint and fire is to be taken away. 

He said MMDCEs who have previously been fired by the President and were not offered the opportunity to air their side of the story under the existing rules, believe the review of the current dispensation, will make the system very democratic.

It will also provide enough room for consultations and consensus building. 

In Mr. Jonah’s view, the practice of electing MMDCEs either from the ruling government or opposition has succeeded in developed and developing countries, so Ghana can be no exception.
