President Praises Ghanaian Media For Supporting Gov't In Education & Information


President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has praised the Ghanaian media for continuously supporting government in informing and educating the public on governance and accelerating the growth of democracy.   

President Akufo-Addo said the media played critical role in ensuring progress in governance, saying he could not over-emphasis how diligent the Ghanaian media had worked towards making his thoughts known to the public.   

Interacting with the media at the presidency in Accra, on Tuesday, president Akufo-Addo said: “I must commend the media especially the presidential press corps for their hard work and tenacity put into ensuring that our activities get the needed publicity”.  

He said even though he has been “one of the greatest victims of irresponsible sections of the media, and I refer to those who have created an industry from spewing calumnies, falsehoods and outright fabrications against my person, I do not regret…my role in the repeal of the old discredited law.”

Nana Akufo-Addo as Attorney-General under the John Kufuor government spearheaded the repeal of the criminal libel law under which some journalists were arrested and detained by government.

“The repeal has inspired the Ghanaian media to be one of the freest and most vibrant on the entire continent of African if not the world.” he added.

According to him, he prefers the “noisy, boisterous, sometimes scurrilous media of today, to the monotonous, praise-singing, sycophantic one of yesteryear.”

He also expressed support at the actions undertook by the media to propel the repealing of the criminal libel law which, he explained, had given the media the needed support to play its watchdog role efficiently and guard against unlawful national resources.   

He believes the media has enriched Ghana’s democratic credentials through their investigations and curiosity.
     
The President assured that his government will continue to create enough room for the media to contribute to the growth of democracy and the nation building as he said democracy at the local level was crucial for the country’s economic and social growth.          

“Ghanaian media continues to enrich government" he said and added that the media was to facilitate the efficient evaluation of public projects and ensure good use of national resources for the betterment all Ghanaians.           

President Akufo-Addo called for the press briefing to interact with the Ghanaian media and to address the concerns of the public through the press.
