Gov’t asked to revamp railway sector to revive communities along routes

The Paramount Chief of Essikado Traditional Council, Nana Kobina Nketsia, has said revamping the railway sector must be done concurrently with the revival of communities along rail lines to ensure effective socio-economic development.  

He pointed out that the current designs for the sector must also be devoid of any traits of colonialism. 

Nana Nketsia  said this at the First Annual Public Lectures organized by the Sekondi -Takoradi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (STCCI) on the topic 'Revitalisation of the Railway Sector'. 

The Paramount Chief of Essikado said  there is the need to create facilities and industries along the rail way lines to add value to the many raw materials from the hinterlands before they are exported to other countries. 

He noted that there is the need to take a cue from advanced countries, where the port is locally owned by the cities where they are located. 

He called for selflessness and dedication to duty on the part of stakeholders to revitalize the once vibrant industry. 

The Sector Minister Joe Ghartey, said a total of one thousand 394 kilometres of railway lines have been identified as priority projects to be constructed within the next four years.
