Parliament To Set Up Legal Department To Assist In Private Members' Bills

Parliament is to set up a Legal Department to among other things assist MPs' in drafting Private Member Bills and offer general legal counsels to the House. 

The Speaker of Parliament, Professor, Aaron Mike Oquaye announced these today on the Floor of the House when welcoming the lawmakers from recess, to the First day of the Second Meeting of the First Session of the Seventh Parliament.  

He said a new Parliamentary Service Board was inaugurated during the recess, adding that a contract has also been awarded for the re-roofing of the Parliamentary Chamber which was destroyed during a rainstorm in the last meeting. 

Meanwhile, the reports of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice CHRAJ, on the National Anti-Corruption Action Plan for January to September 2015 and the Annual Report of the Public Interest and Accountability Committee PIAC, on the management of petroleum revenues for the year 2015 were laid. 

The Appointment Committee of Parliament is also preparing to vet the new chief Justice and the Auditor-General.
