Chiefs And People Of Sumbrungu-Anayeem Displeased Over Aviation Minister's Failure To Visit Airport Project


The chiefs and people of Sumbrungu-Anateem a community in the Bolgatanga Municipality have expressed their displeasure over the inability of the Minister of Aviation to visit the on-going construction of the airport in the area.  

According to them, some authorities in the region are devising ways and means to divert the attention of the sector minister to relocate the airport project from the area to a different palace. 

They said when the Aviation minister paid a working visit to the region, the regional minister sent her to Sirigu a suburb of Bolgatanga to look for a new place for the construction of an airport which they described as unacceptable.  

Speaking to the media at a press conference organized by the Chiefs, Tindaanas and the Youth Development Association of Sumbrungu, Elias Ayinbila Apasiya, a secretary of the group said the land for the airport project was acquired by government of Ghana over thirty years ago.  

He noted that the chiefs, Tindaanas and the people in the area willingly offered the land to government for the construction of the airport. 

He said there are rumours that feasibility studies done by some technical men from the Aviation ministry revealed that the site is not good for the construction is absolutely false. 

He said feasibility studies and assessment was conducted by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, the Ghana Air Force, Lands Commission and Town and Country Planning Department and report showed that the area was suitable for the construction of the airport. 

He said successive governments have made several efforts to continue the project which is sixty percent complete but funding has always been the problem. 

Mr. Ayinbila Apasiya said former president John Dramani Mahama visited the site in November 2013 to access the progress of the work. 

He said even the then candidate Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo now the President of the Republic of Ghana when he visited the Chiefs and people in the area prior to the elections promised to continue the project. 

Mr. Ayinbila Apasiya said the entire community was shocked when they heard the regional minister want to relocate the airport project. 

He however, appealed to the Minister of Aviation to as a matter of urgency look into the matter and treat it with the seriousness it deserves to avoid any inconveniences.
