CDD Advocates Amendment To Constitution On Selecting Ministers From Parliament


The Center for Democratic Development, (CDD), is advocating an amendment to the constitution of which allows for the president to select ministers from sitting Members of Parliament. 

Article 78 one of the constitution stipulates that the majority of ministers of state shall  be appointed from among members of Parliament. 

At a media interaction in Accra, the Director of Research at CDD, Dr. Franklyn Oduro said this system of governance reduces the effectiveness of parliament. 

He said not only does serving in the executive makes an MP less committed to his constituents, but it also weakens the oversight role of parliament.

The Deputy Majority Leader, Sarah Adwoa Safo though seconds the idea of having another look at this provision, thinks the current situation makes economic sense.
