Be at forefront in fight against galamsey - President Akufo-Addo to Armed Forces

President Akufo-Addo has charged the Ghana Armed Forces to continue to discharge their duties professionally in the face of complex and sophisticated challenges to security. 

He said the government will re tool and support training methods to ensure the Army becomes the beacon of Armed Forces across the continent. 

President Akufo-Addo who was speaking at the Presentation of Colours to the Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment, at a ceremony at the Gondar Barracks, Burma Camp, in Accra said his government will equip the Armed Forces with modern military equipment and training to enrich its human resource. 

With the issue of galamsey topical, President Akufo Addo encouraged the Ghana Armed Forces to be at the forefront in the fight against this menace. 

This is the first time in the 54 years existence of the Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment that it is being honoured for its diligent work for the nation. 

The ceremony for the Presentation of Colours, in tune with long standing military traditions across the world, has been the sole preserve for units in the infantry. 

However, in line with the decision taken to present colours to deserving combat support units of the Ghana Armed Forces, the Armoured Recce Regiment has been honoured  with its own Colours.

The other units which have ever been presented with their own colours are the 48 Engineer Regiment and the 66 Artillery Regiment. 

According to the military, the Colours of a regiment represent its honour and devotion to duty. They represent the fighting spirit of military units, and are symbols of bravery and unity. The Colours of the Armoured Recce Regiment are Red, Black and Yellow. 

President Akufo-Addo who presented the colours to the Recce Regiment asked them to honour and defend these Colours at all times. 

The President was grateful to the officers and men in uniform for putting their lives  on the line in protecting the territorial integrity of the country.

He said government will equip them to deal with new threats to the security of the country.

As government intensifies its efforts to curb galamsey which is polluting the country’s waters, and destroying farmlands and forests,  President Akufo-Addo said Ghanaians would continue to rely on the efforts of the security services, with the Armed Forces in the forefront, to help deal with the problem.
