Education Minister inaugurates Audit Committee

The Minister of Education, Dr. Mathew Opoku-Prempeh, has inaugurated a five-member audit committee for the Ministry to ensure that financial management is done in an effective and efficiency manner.

The Committee members are made up of the external members from the Internal Audit Agency (IAA) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG) and senior management members of the Ministry with additional co-opted members.

The members are Mr Caleb Annan, Mr. J.A. Thompson, from the IAA, Mr. Joseph Blankson from the ICAG, Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah and Mr. Isaac Biney are from the Ministry.

Dr. Opoku-Prempeh said the inauguration is in line with the provisions in section 86 to 88, under the Public Financial Management Act, 2016, (Act 921).

He said the committee is to pursue the implementation of any recommendation contained in an internal audit report, Parliament’s decision on the Auditor General’s report and the report of an internal monitoring unit in the covered entity.

Dr. Opoku-Prempeh said the committee is to prepare an annual statement showing the states of implementation of any recommendation contained in an internal audit report and parliament’s decision on the Auditor General’s report.

The Minister charged the Committee members to work according to the dictates of their mandate to ensure financial prudence in the management of the country’s resources.

The Chief Director for the Ministry of Education, Enoch Cobbinah, said the committee was critical in the implementation of public financial management and urged members to be objective in the discharge of their duties.

Meanwhile, the Minister used the opportunity to donate a bus to the Mafi-Kumase Senior Technical School in the Volta Region, in fulfilment of a promise made by President Akufo-Addo following a request from the Headmaster.

He said President Akufo-Addo had also ensure the payment of utility bills amounting to GHc42, 000 for the school and directed a team to build a technical workshop for the academic facility. 

Dr. Opoku-Prempeh urged the school authority to make good use of the vehicle to the benefit of the students.

Headmaster of the school, Courage Meteku, thanked the government for the gesture and promised to maintain the bus for future use.
