UN hails Algeria for "peaceful" parliamentary elections

The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres has commended Algeria for conducting a "peaceful" parliamentary elections on May 4.

António Guterres's spokesperson said that the UN chief "welcomed any further steps the Government and stakeholders can take to continue to strengthen the democratic process".

According to media reports, the ruling coalition won the vote.

At the invitation of the Algerian Government, the UN deployed a panel of electoral experts to the country on 28 April for ten days to assist with the parliamentary elections.

Through his spokesperson, UN chief António Guterres congratulated Algeria on holding peaceful parliamentary elections.

He also took note of the Algerian Constitutional Council's announcement regarding the results of the 4 May elections to the People's National Assembly.

More than 100 countries have requested and received election assistance from the Organisation since 1991.

The UN’s political arm said it provides technical assistance to Member States during elections to help them build "credible and sustainable national electoral systems".
