About 43% water produced daily not accounted for due to illegal connections- GWCL

About 43 percent of water produced daily by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) cannot be accounted for due to illegal connections.
 
This is affecting revenue generation by the company which compels it to continue borrowing for expansion projects to make water accessible to the people. 
 
The Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer of GWCL, Kwadwo Daase, disclosed this in an interview with Radio Ghana in Koforidua after the arrest of a 55 year old man, Felix Addo Donkor for his involvement in illegal connection of pipelines at Adukrom in the Akwapim North Municipality. 

According to Mr Daase, the suspect, a retrenched staff of GWCL is known for illegal connections of pipe borne water in the area.  

He said the suspect, Donkor, was caught in the act reconnecting his disconnected pipes on the 27th of last month and selling water to artisans working on a building site. 

A scuffle ensued between the suspect and a resident which finally ended up at the Police station.

Mr Daase said the suspect was charged for assault, attempted stealing, stealing and damage to property.
 
He is also to refund 1,618.45 cedis being cost loss in water, revenue and administrative charges.
