Deputy Gender Minister urges disabled to focus on fortune in their predicament The Deputy Minister of Gender Children and Social Protection, Mrs. Gifty Twum Ampofo, has called on physically challenged persons not to over-emphasize on their disability but rather look for fortune in their impediment. She added that society should lend a helping hand to them and not to ascribe spiritual connotations to their disabilities; they should help them seek medical assistance. The Deputy Gender Minister was speaking at an event organised by the Wal-Jamaha Alliance of New York and the Ghana Visually Impaired Muslim Students (GVIMS) to commemorate a scholarship program for the Visually Impaired students at the Akuapeman Senior High School in Akronpong in the Eastern Region. Wal-Jamaha Alliance of New York, was derived from the Wal-Jamaha platform which was formed three years ago; their main aim is to help the underprivileged in society. The Wal- Jamaha platform is made up of Ghanaians living abroad and some Ghanaians in the country. The Alliance is therefore open to members of the general public who wish to join in impacting the lives of the underprivileged and physically challenged persons. Wal-Jamaha New York collaborated with the Ghana Visually impaired Students Association to commemorate a scholarship program for the visually impaired students at the Akuapeman Senior High School in Akronpong in the Eastern Region. The program was on the theme:, "Route to End Street Begging for Students Living with Disability". The beneficiaries are expected to get 4000 Ghana cedis every three months. Mrs. Gifty Twum Ampofo said visually impaired people are also humans and have potentials that can contribute meaningfully to the community and the nation as a whole. She added that President Akufo-Addo has made a pledge not to leave anyone behind and therefore will support any initiative that will compliment government's effort towards achieving economic empowerment of the citizenry. The Coordinator of the Wal-Jamaha Alliances, who doubles as the New Patriotic Party, (NPP), Deputy National Organizer in New York, Issah Balla Saeed, assured the students of their continuous support and that they will bring in more donors to support the physically challenged persons. The Head Master of the school thanked the donors and made a passionate appeal to the Minister and the donor partners to come to the aid of the school and provide them with a 15 seater bus. GBC
