JHS Teacher Wins 2016 Best Teacher Award


A female teacher of the Sowah Din Memorial 2 Junior High School in the Adentan Municipality of the Greater Accra, Rita Oppong has been crowned as the overall National Best Teacher for 2016. 

President John Dramani Mahama who was the special guest of honour, presented Ms. Oppong, a pre-Vocational Skills teacher with Ghc100, 000 dummy cheque for the construction of a three bedroom house.

The first runner up was Samuel Kofi Boateng of the Ghana Secondary Technical School at Takoradi was presented  a a double decker Toyota pickup for his efforts whilst, the second runner up was Dilemma Inusah Salami of the Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School at Nsoatre in the Brong Ahafo Region was awarded with a Saloon Car.

The 22nd National Best Teacher Award which took place at the Jubilee Park in Sunyani Wednesday afternoon, was on the theme ‘Valuing teachers, improving their Status.’

In all 43 teachers and 32 schools were awarded.
 
The event comes as Ghana joins the world to commemorate World Teachers’ Day on Wednesday, October 5, 2016.
President John Mahama said government will continue to provide support to technical and vocational training institutions.

“We are prioritizing technical vocational education and training and so currently under a special programme the development of skills for industry programme, we have selected one technical school from each region, including two polytechnics and the University of Education, Kumasi Campus for a complete and total upgrade of their facilities,” he said.

President Mahama also expressed gratitude to the Education ministry for its aggressive efforts to stamp out teacher absenteeism in public schools.

He said unannounced visits to public schools by a resourced inspectorate board has worked in reducing the practice.
