He said the service was user-friendly, extremely convenient and offers services such as checking of account balance and viewing a mini statement of the last five transactions. Other services include the transfer of funds from a UniBank’s account to any mobile money wallet without a mobile money agent and vice versa, payment for merchant services like utility bills, school fees and airline or bus tickets, buying of airtime on any network, among others. Mr Nyarko-Pong said Smile Mobile Banking was the latest on a list of innovative alternative banking channels introduced by UniBank Ghana to provide customers and the general public a hassle-free banking with the highest level of security. The Managing Director said the Smile Mobile Banking service which could be used in any part of the world, was designed by the bank to bring basic banking access and functionality to customers on their mobile phones. He said due to the bank’s commitment to always bring out something new to its customers it was recently named Best SME Bank in Ghana by Banker Africa Awards and adjudged ‘Best Bank’ in Product Innovation at the 14th Ghana Banking Awards. Mr Archie Hesse, Chief Executive Officer, Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement System (GHIPSS), commended the management of UniBank for the initiative, saying it would help reduce reliance on the use of cash. “The Central Bank spends a lot of cash to print our money and all this could be reduced if we could switch to cashless banking,” he added.
