Police and Public to wage war against   armed robbers and motorbike snatchers


Residents of Navrongo in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality are living in fear and panic following recent spate of armed robbery cases, motorbike snatching at gun point and molestation of people who go out in the night in the area. 

Residents have described it as an unfortunate development because the area has not been experiencing these recent happenings at this magnitude. 

As a result of this, the chiefs and people have vowed to wage war against recalcitrant persons and individuals who perpetuate all kinds of crimes in the municipality by reporting them to the police. 

To this end, the Municipal Police Command has been urged to tighten its surveillance by increasing the number of police visibility check points particularly at areas noted for motorbike snatching. 

The MP for Navrongo Central, Mark Woyongo, said this when the Regional Minister, Albert Abongo and his Deputy, Dr. Robert Kuganab-Lem paid a courtesy call on the Regent of Navrongo, Attah, Balenia Adda, at his palace in Navrongo. 

The Regional Minister’s visit formed part of his tour to some paramountcies in the region to pay homage after his appointment into office as the upper east regional minister. 

It was also to solicit for wisdom and support to enable him run the administration of the region smoothly. 

He was accompanied by some departmental heads from the regional coordinating council and regional house of chiefs and party executives. 

The MP, Mr. Woyongo, who was the Former Minister for the Interior, said security is information based.  

He said the security agencies are there to protect the people and without adequate information from the public, they can not operate effectively. 

He argued that the perpetrators who commit all kinds of crimes are well known because they live amongst the people and underscored the urgent need for the people to voluntarily report such recalcitrant persons to the police. 

The Regent of Navrongo, Attah, Balenia Adda, said the situation is becoming a worry in the area and called on appropriate quarters to bring the situation under control. 

He said the farming season is here again and farmers will have to depend on fertilizers and other agro-chemicals to improve their yields. 

He therefore appealed to government to subsidise fertilizer for the farmers to afford to improve productivity which will subsequently sustain their livelihoods. 

The Regional Minister, Albert Abongo, said he is in talks with the Regional Security Agency on some of the measures that can be taken to control the spate and called on the public to voluntarily give out information. 

He said he wills liaise with MOFA to see what package is there for farmers on fertilizers and tractors. 

Mr. Albert asked for the support of the chiefs and people to enable him stir the affairs of the region smoothly. 

He also promised to link up with government agencies and institutions to ensure the needed development is brought to the region.
