Illegal mining is major cause of poor water quality 

Civil Society Groups in the Water and Sanitation Sectors have identified illegal mining, popularly called ‘galamsey’ along water bodies as the major cause of poor water quality which has contributed to increased cost of production.  

The Group said galamsey activities pollute the water bodies which serve as the main source of supply for the Ghana Water Company.  

The GWSC spends huge sums of money to treat such water to make it  safe for  public  consumption. 

A Civil Society group, A-rocha Ghana in collaboration with the  Royal Netherlands Embassy, the Forestry Commission and other  organisations have embarked on a project dubbed, “Living Water from the Mountain,  Protecting Atiwa Water Resources” to protect the Atiwa forest.
