19th October, 2015 The Daily Graphic backs calls for the PURC to ensure that any upward adjustment in utility tariff is not beyond what the Ghanaian worker can afford. According to the Paper, the workers Union says it is not against any upward review of utilities since it cannot do without such social amenities. The Graphic supports the TUC’s calls on the PURC and service providers to cast their minds back to see whether previous increases in utility prices match quality delivery of services. The Ghanaian Times expresses the need to end "extreme poverty now." It refers to the launch of the World Bank Africa Poverty report entitled. “Poverty in a rising Africa”, where President Mahama was joined by World Bank President, Dr Jim Yong Kim, and other dignitaries to launch the project. The Paper says even though the report indicates that in Ghana, poverty fell from 52.6% in 1990 to 21.4% in 2012, more than six million Ghanaians, representing a quarter of the people are wallowing in extreme poverty. The Times says even though significant success has been chalked up, it shares in President Mahama's advice that the opportunity is ripe to launch a final assault to eradicate extreme poverty in Africa.
