Role of Slovak communities in development stressed by UN chief


The role local communities can play in development has been stressed by the UN Secretary-General.

Speaking in Slovakia, Ban Ki-moon urged the eastern European country to "own" the global development goals agreed by world leaders in September.

World leaders signed up to the 17 new Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs at the UN in New York last month.

The goals which include climate-related targets will frame the international development agenda for the next 15 years.

Speaking in Levoca in Slovakia, the UN chief urged the mayor of the historic city to own and implement the SDGs.

He added it was important to take what he called "all necessary measures to address climate change", a phenomenon which he said may affect the mayor's own city and country.
