Students appeal for footbridge to curtail accidents Students of the Kumasi campus of the College of Technology Education of the University of Education, Winneba have appealed to the Ghana Highway Authority to construct as a matter of urgency a footbridge to curtail the number of knockdowns of students who cross the road daily to attend lectures. The number of knockdowns have increased following the construction of the Kumasi-Abuakwa stretch of the Kumasi-Sunyani Highway. While, some few lose their lives, many survive the accidents but with everlasting deformity. Radio Ghana’s Correspondent Thomas Nsowah-Adjei reports that, the students who attend part time lectures in the evening are the worst affected. Students are likely to hit the street in protest against the Ghana Highway if the request is not heeded to. This came up during the 2015/2016 matriculation of the University in Kumasi. In all three thousand, and 89 students including one thousand and three females were admitted to pursue under graduate courses. One hundred and 41 students including 93 females were also admitted to pursue postgraduate studies. The new Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Mawutor Avoke regretted that many of the qualified graduates could not be admitted due to inadequate facilities and limited human resources. He however said the quality of staff in the University keeps improving over the years. The management has put in place mechanism to facilitate good teaching and learning environment which include dedicated faculty members, and other staff who are eager to offer students the assistance they will need to excel academically. Prof. Avoke noted that the students will have no excuse if they obtain bad grades now that the library has been stocked with current books, journals, and articles both hard copy and on-line. Internet connectivity is also available for online research activities. The Vice Chancellor asked the students to guard against occultism, peddling and use of narcotic drugs of which the penalty for offending students is outright dismissal. GBC
