Research Institutions charged to intensify sustainable agricultural for survival Research Institutions and Universities have been challenged to find ways of producing drought resistant and early maturing crops to feed the growing population. The Focal Regional Manager for the “Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Program on Water, Land and Ecosystem (WLE) in the Volta and Niger Basins, Dr Cush Ngonzo Luwesi threw the challenge at the Wa campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS) at Bamahu. Dr. Luwesi was delivering a lecture. Radio Ghana’s Correspondent, Emmanuel Mensah-Abludo who was at the lecture reports that the Lecture was organized by the Department of Environment and Resource Studies of the Faculty of Integrated Development Studies of UDS. Dr Cush Ngonzo Luwesi’s paper was titled “The Roadmap to Sustainable Agricultural Intensification: The CGIAR/WLE Research Program at the Crossroads”. He indicated that there should be a clear agenda on sustainable agriculture for our survival. Dr, Luwesi hammered home the significance of satisfying the needs of the present generation without compromising that of the future generations. The lecture traced the various predictions and interventions made in the agricultural sector from the 1950s through the 1980s when there was wide spread famine across the globe. Dr, Luwesi charged research institutions and those in academia to be at the forefront of developing drought resistant and early maturing crops for Africa to be food secured. Dr. Luwesi explained sustainable agricultural intensification which was the heart-beat of his lecture. The Dean of the Faculty of Integrated Development Studies of UDS, Dr. Sylvester Galaa who moderated the session thanked Dr. Dzigbodi Doke for her instrumentality in organizing the lecture. Dr. Galaa observed there are prospects of mainstreaming some of the issues that came up at the lecture into the curriculum of the Faculty as way of propagating the Dr. Luwesi’s ideas to a wider audience.
