District Assemblies challenged to deliver on mandate

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies,Prof. Joshua Alabi has challenged newly sworn-in Assembly Members to put in place proactive measures that will help the assemblies to become a reference point for de-centralisation in the country.

He said the local government Act of 1993 outlines unique roles Assembly Members should play in exercising their functions to promote governance and democracy.

Prof. Alabi said this at the inauguration of    Assembly Members for Tema Metropolitan Assembly.

The 46 Assembly members were sworn in by Justice Adjei Frimpong, a High Court judge in Tema.  The members  took the oath of office,  allegiance and  secrecy to ensure commitment and loyalty during their tenure of office.  

Professor Alarbi urged the Assembly members to cooperate  with each other and work diligently to achieve the objectives of the assembly.

He added that the role of the assemblyman entails sacrifice and the submerging of personal interest for the public good, hence the need for them to put their nation above selfish considerations.
