Bolgatanga: Suspected Thief Lynched At Zaare

The Upper East Regional Police Command is investigating a case in which an angry mob beat up two suspected thieves leading to the death of one Razak, a taxi driver.

The incident took place at Zaare, an area close to the Bolgatanga Regional hospital.

19-year old, Gorden Anangimbire, who happens to be an accomplice of the deceased managed to escape death and is currently receiving treatment at the hospital after being rescued by the Police.

The two were alleged to have broken into the room of one Mark Abogbire, a teacher, when he was away. It took the intervention of Major Apibire, a resident of the area to effect the arrest of the thieves.

The suspected thieves are said to be buglers terrorising residents of the area with their criminal activities.

The Area Commander of the Special Weapons and Tactics, SWAT team, ASP David Osei Boakye, said the activities of criminals in the region is on the increase and mentioned motorbike theft and burglary as some of the activities receiving attention by the police.

On the issue of mob justice, ASP Boakye, said though there are provisions in the existing law that inhibits mob justice, majority of the people have turned deaf ears to the said law due to what they call lapses in the security and the judicial system.

He was emphatic that the laws of the country frown on mob justice; it is therefore incumbent on all to respect the law and always assist the police in the course of their investigations.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited at the hospital morgue pending investigations.
