Ghana Tourism Authority to clamp down on illegal operators

The Ghana Tourism Authority in collaboration with Tourism Federation will from the 16th of next month embark on a nationwide enforcement exercise on operators, who have not been properly registered with the Authority and establishments that are not paying the 1% Tourism Levy.

The Board Chairman of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Akunu Dake announced this at a tourism stakeholders meeting in Kumasi.

He said the Tourism Act was instituted two years ago to among others regulate the tourism Levy that will go into the Tourism Development Fund.

The Fund is to be used for the development of the tourism industry, and marketing and promoting Ghana as a tourism hub.

Mr Dake disclosed that the Tourism Fund over the past two years has been able to generate GH¢ 8.5 million. 

However, money accrued from the Levy into the Fund is still low, attributing it to weak sensitization and the reluctance of tourism and hospitality establishments to pay the 1% Tourism Levy.
