Jirapa District Completes Street Naming Exercise

The history behind prominent people and landmarks in some districts in the Upper West Region has been enshrined in the implementation of the street naming project.

The fourth to complete the street naming ahead of the Presidential deadline is the Jirapa District.

At a ceremony to inaugurate the signage at Jirapa, the DCE for the area, Vivian Nelly Kunko, said the exercise will enhance easy access to places as well as promote the culture of the people.

The Street Naming and Property Address System is one of the projects being implemented by Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies across the country.

The purpose of the project is to among other things make identification of places very easy.

It is also to assist the assemblies in the collection of revenue and proper planning.

Speaking to Radio Ghana, the Paramount Chief of the area, Naa Angsoleh Ganaa said the implementation of the project will invoke the memory of their forefathers who contributed significantly to the development of the district.

Some of the personalities  the street were named after are the former Minister of Roads and Transport of the Fourth Republic, Edward Salia, for his role in politics and bringing development through the tarring of major roads in the region and the brain behind the creation of the Jirapa District.

Others include the longest serving Former IGP, Peter Nanfuri, for his development in the security system of the country and the former Paramount Chief of the area, Naa Bapenyiri Yelpoe, for being instrumental in the development of the district.
