Call To Bridge Yawning Literacy Gap In Ghana

A Lecturer at the Sociology Department of the University of Ghana, Professor Clara Fayorsey, has called on government and stakeholders in education to put necessary measures in place to bridge the yawning literacy gap in the country. 

She said this is the only way to empower women who are marginalised in society and enhance development in health, hygiene and environmental issues. 

Professor Fayorsey was speaking at this year's World Literacy Day at Old Ningo in the Greater Accra Region. 

She noted that the three regions of the north have the lowest literacy rates of between 22 to 26 percent while Greater Accra has 82 percent followed by Eastern Region which has a literacy rate of 64 percent.
