A member of the Council of State Mrs. Gifty Afenyi Dadzie has underscored the need for the country to recognize the importance of technical and vocational education, since it can contribute effectively to economic growth. She said if the right premium had been placed on technical, vocational education and training, Ghana would have been in a better position to produce more entrepreneurs.
Mrs. Afenyi Dadzie was speaking at the 5th Graduation of Apprentices of the Greater Accra Regional Branch of the Ghana Hairdressers and Beauticians Association GHABA in Accra . She expressed worry about the extent to which the country has ignored the informal sector explaining that the informal sector provide jobs for the majority. She therefore called on the state to do more for technical and vocational institutions.
She also encouraged the Council for Technical, Vocational Education and Training, COTVET, to identify and develop a framework to partner business associations to improve the lives of Ghanaians through employment generation. Mrs. Afenyi Dadzie also charged the 512 graduates to exhibit professionalism and make customer satisfaction a top priority.
The National President of GHABA, Mrs. Joyce Appiah said for the past six years, the association has been collaborating with the Danish Hairdressers Union and South African affiliates to ensure an international standard certification for Africa .
She said that the association has in place HIV policies with support from the Ghana AIDs Commission. According to her the move will help manage and mitigate the impact of HIV and AIDS on members of the association.
