Poor sanitation

Latest statistics published by the Joint Monitoring Platform on sanitation indicate that Ghana's sanitation coverage stands at 10 percent.  This means only 10 percent of Ghanaians have access to an improved latrine among others.  The National Photo Exhibitor, Irene Mensah disclosed this at a photo exhibition to mark this year’s international year of sanitation in Cape Coast.

The report also noted that 51 percent of Ghanaians use shared latrines which are generally not accepted as an improved facility due to the health hazard they pose.  Madam Mensah also hinted that in Africa Ghana ranks 48 out of the 52 countries reported and  14 out of 15 countries in West Africa.  She said the country cannot advance to a middle income status with this present level of deplorable sanitation and called on the media to help sensitize the public to the need to keep their environment clean.

The Central Regional Environmental Health Officer, Richard Teigaga called
for attitudinal change in order to fight against the poor sanitation engulfing the nation.
