Starlets ready for Banjul battle
Starlets ready for Banjul battle
A 20-member playing squad of the national Under-17 team have left Accra for Banjul for Saturday’s deciding game against the Gambia. Ghana play the Young Scorpions tomorrow in the second leg fixture as the final round of matches are played across the continent for the remaining seven places at next year’s Africa U-17 Championships in Algeria – who are the only team to have booked a place by virtue of being the host nation.

The 8th U-17 Championships will also serve as qualification for World Cup to be staged in Nigeria.

Coach E.K Afranie’s side – the Black Starlets, Eritrea and Burkina Faso, are the only teams involved in the weekend’s qualification who were present at the last Championships.

The Black Starlets coach believes he has the team to pick one of the available places at the Championship.

“We have put in some good preparations and expect to qualify from Banjul to Algeria,” he told www.ghanafa.org.

“We know the Gambians will be tough at home but we are sure of scaling over the hurdle. The team has come this far and we can’t afford any slip at this stage.”

Ghana enters Saturday’s game on the back of a 3-1 first leg win at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi a fortnight ago.
