A retired educationist, Opanin Adum Atta says the School Feeding Programme and other interventions aimed at making education accessible to every Ghanaian child of School going age must be supported to make them sustainable. He noted that previous efforts at making education free at the basic level have failed but described the current policy as a well designed and structured one that meets the aspirations of a Ghanaian parent.
Opanin Adum Atta was reacting to a statement attributed to the President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers, Kwame Alorvi that, the School Feeding Programme must be scrapped and the resources used to increase salaries of teachers and construction of more infrastructures to provide more access to children of school going age. The statement also said the programme is not equitably distributed, but rather has increased migration of pupils to schools implementing the programme.
Opanin Adum Atta said Mr. Alorvi should appreciate the increase in enrolment in schools that are piloting the programme and commend the government for it instead of condemnation. The Vice President of NAGRAT, Addae Poku said, the statement has rather been misconstrued saying, members of the Association still insist that the feeding of Pupils in schools must be the responsibility of parents and that government should invest such resources into different programmes.
