Ghana and Italy have signed an agreement on enhancing Security and Co-operation in the fight against human trafficking, smuggling and illegal immigration.  The agreement which is in two parts will benefit the Ghana Immigration and Police Services.

The Italian Minister of Interior Roberto Maroni signed for his country whilst the outgoing Minister of the Interior Cletus Avoka initialed for Ghana.  The Italian Minister of Interior Roberto Maroni said the agreement underlines the significant bilateral relations between Italy and Ghana.  He said the complex nature of organized crime calls for close co-operation between countries to rub it in the bud.

Mr. Maroni pledged Italy’s willingness to maintain strong economic ties with Ghana.  The outgoing Minister of the Interior Cletus Avoka noted that the agreement has come at an opportune time when the Ghana Immigration Service is expanding its border patrols.  This requires both technical and financial support.

Mr. Avoka said the agreement will enhance the capacity of Ghana’s security agencies in the fight against organized crime, illegal migration and human trafficking, which is becoming a huge global menace.  As part of the agreement the Italian government donated eleven vehicles to the Ghana Immigration Service to assist border patrol operations.
