Elections must be free and fair - Afari-Gyan
Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan

The Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan has stated that the Electoral Commission alone can not bring about free and fair elections in the country.  He believes it is a shared responsibility of all stakeholders adding that failure to do so will pollute the environment and make genuine democratic elections more difficult to achieve.

Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan saids periodic elections must be free and fair since they are of great importance to the democratic process.  He said its absence will not show the true will and sovereignty of the people.

Dr. Afari-Gyan made the submissions when he delivered the 2009 Alumni Lecture at the University of Ghana, Legon.

He expressed sentiments over some worrying trends that characterize elections in Ghana.
