The Ministry of Communications has expressed concern about the multiplicity of communication masts erected by Service providers throughout the country. The Law requires any person intending to construct a mast or tower to get clearance from Ghana Civil Aviation Authority. They should also obtain permit and certificate from the EPA and Town and District Planning Committee and allow co-location.
Deputy Minister of Communications, Gideon Quarcoo stated this in Parliament yesterday following a question by the Member for Weija, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, about the Ministry’s Policy on the siting of communication masts in residential areas.
Mr. Quracoo said the policy regarding the siting of communication masts is captured in the various communication enactments promulgated by parliament. Which are the Electronic Communications Regulations 2003. He however, mentioned that technical arrangements among service providers are on-going to address the issues.
According to our correspondents, a question on health hazards associated with the siting of masts in residential areas generated a heated debate. The Deputy Minister said the Ministry will collaborate with NCA and the Atomic Energy Commission to determine the level of radiation from the mast.
