Committee complete investigation into allegations against GRC Head

The seven member committee set up to investigate allegations brought up against management of Ghana Railway Company Limited says, despite the refusal of the Estate Manager of the company, Charles Quaye to appear before it, it will go ahead to submit its interim report to Parliament by next week. The Chairman of the committee and MP for Prestea Huni Valley, Albert Kwaku Obbin disclosed this in an interview with Radio Ghana at the last sitting of the committee in Takoradi.

Mr. Kwaku Obbin said the committee met 31 times and 12 times with the Managing Director, Rufus Quaye alone.

Mr. Kwaku Obbin said the Estate Manager, Charles Quaye was earlier co-operating and appeared before the committee for some time. However, a day before the committee’s sitting came to an end in Takoradi; Mr. Quaye called for a group of lawyers to represent him.

He said the committee dismissed his application and Mr. Quaye subsequently decided not to appear again before it. Mr. Obbin said once Mr. Quaye refused to appear before the committee, the assumption is that he accepts all the allegations leveled against him by the railway workers.

The seven member committee was set up in April to investigate allegations of the sale of serviceable locomotives, GRC’s contract with Abatech and Hold-trade companies, the Managing Director’s age, as well as allegations of the MD’s operation of secret account with Zenith Bank.

Mr. Obbin said the committee has uncovered a lot and will make public its findings when it presents its final report to parliament.

He however suggested that government to look at the management structure and the quality of personnel in management at Ghana Railways.
