The Brong Ahafo Regional Hajj Coordinating Committee is calling for a fair representation on the National Hajj Council in order to purge the council of what it termed corrupt practices. The Committee asserted that the hand picking of people to form the council has led to mismanagement as well as created an opportunity for certain individuals to enrich themselves at the expense of the council.
These sentiments were expressed at a News Conference organized by the Committee contended that the interim Hajj Management Committee which is a subsidiary of the Ghana Pilgrimage Organization, failed to organize a successful Hajj last year.
The Committee stressed that the Muslim Community has for a long time been a victim of what it termed a “Mismanaged Hajj” by self seeking individuals sometimes posing as philanthropists and would not sit unconcerned for the trend to continue.
They explain that the improper manner of conducting the Hajj over the years has resulted in the locking up of more than GHC 400,000 in the Hajj accounts at the Agricultural Development Bank, ADB, without any auditing since 2005. They are therefore calling on the National Chief Imam not to allow his office to be used by some individuals.
