Phase 1 of Asogli Power to provide 200 megawatt by December
Energy N=MInister Felix Owusu Adjepong

The Minister of Energy, Felix Owusu Agyepong says the provision of adequate energy is key to the country’s quest to achieve a middle income status by the year 2012. He said adequate supply of energy can lead to drastic reduction in the payment for the cost of power generated. Mr. Owusu Agyepong said this when he visited the premises of Sunon Asogli power plant located at Kpone near Tema. The project would utilize natural gas from the West African Gas Pipeline from Nigeria to produce 560 megawatts electricity out which 200 megawatts would be provided by the end of the year upon the completion of the first phase.

He urged industrialists to increase their efficiency and cooperate with government to ensure a reduction in the cost of  power generation. Mr. Owusu Agyepong gave the assurance that government will play its role effectively to ensure that the challenges facing the country in terms of generating power, are solved for the benefit of the consumer.

The Agbogbomefia of the Asogli Traditional area and the brain behind the project, Togbui Afede said the supply of gas has become a major challenge for completing the project even before schedule. He said the megawatt of energy would have been supplied by the December deadline if gas was supplied for the project.
